Midland League
Athlone 3 members Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, George Bodor and Richard Frank played their first match against Roscrea this Wednesday and had a 2-2 draw, however winning 33 games to 30.
Orla and Michele lost their doubles 7-9 while Richard and George won 9-8. In the mixed doubles Michele and Richard combined to win 9-4 but Orla and George were beaten 8-9.
They have a bye this week and the next outing is against Birr Wilmer 2.
In Division 4 Joan Conway, Anna Walsh, John Cooney and Dave Costello played Moate and were happy with a 4-0 win against their near neighbours. Portumna are their next opponents this Tuesday in Athlone.
Dennis Johnston Memorial Cup Competition
This annual competition will be a one day event and Mullingar tennis club is organising the event for Sunday 28th August starting at 11 and continuing until 3pm approximately. It is a team competition and each team consists of two ladies and two men. Athlone are entering two teams and interested members can register on the official form in the clubhouse.
Summer Leagues
Sean Raftery, Des Windsor Mc Glynn, Pat Conway, Orla Kinahan and Sine Macfarlane had excellent wins in the summer leagues during the past week. Presentation of prizes will be on Thursday 1st with our annual club championships being played during September.
Junior Tournaments
Junior tournaments continue this Tuesday and Thursday in preparation for the junior club championships which will commence in mid-August. These sessions will be supervised by Lisa Brennan and will run from 12 to 3pm and all members are encouraged to attend.
Adult Beginner Lessons
These tennis lessons for adults begin on Wednesday 10th at 7pm and members and non- members are welcome to attend. To book your place call Lisa at 0862215843.
Adult Open Day
The club is organising an adult open day on Sunday August 14th from 11 to 2pm. This is an opportunity for adults to visit the club and sample the game of tennis. Coaches will be on hand to answer questions and deliver advice if necessary. Refreshments will be served.
Junior Open Day
Our junior open day is planned for Sunday August 28th all juniors are welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring their friends to participate in matches and coaching sessions. Coaching starts at 11 and continues to 2pm.
Junior Coaching
Clem Higginbotham continues coaching every Saturday for children under 7 at 10am. Children ages 8 to 11 have coaching at 11 and coaching for older children will start at 12. Clem can be contacted at 0864022490.

Social Tennis
Men compete every Monday, the ladies play every Tuesday while mixed doubles competitions are held every Thursday. These nights are opportunities for new potential members to come along and play a few games..
