Midland League
The midland league started last Tuesday with Athlone Division 4 team members Ann O’ Sullivan, Joan Conway, Kieran Mc Carthy and Dave Costello travelling to play in Birr. Both teams had to contend with the wet blustery conditions and in the ladies and men’s doubles matches Athlone ladies and men were defeated 9-2.
However in the two mixed doubles events Anne O’ Sullivan and Dave Costello combined to win 9-4 while Joan Conway and Kieran Mc Carthy were also winners 9-5. Our match this Tuesday is against our near neighbours from Moate tennis club, some of whose members are also registered with Athlone tennis club.
Athlone 3 members were very disappointed as their match against Tullamore was postponed by the away team. Team members Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, George Bodor and Richard Frank have a home fixture against Roscrea this Wednesday.
Summer Leagues
Harry O’ Rourke, Marek Rose and Jacinta Digby were among the early winners in the summer leagues during the past week.
American Tournament
Our August American tournament will be this Sunday 7th starting at 11 and continuing until 1pm.
Junior Tournaments
Junior tournaments are being organised every Tuesday and Thursday starting Tuesday August 2nd and continuing until 11th in preparation for the junior club championships which will commence in mid-August. These supervised sessions will run from 12 to 3pm and all members are encouraged to attend.
Adult Beginner Lessons
These tennis lessons for adults begin on Wednesday 10th at 7pm and members and non- members are welcome to attend. To book your place call Lisa at 0862215843.
Adult Open Day
The club is organising an adult open day on Sunday August 14th from 11 to 2pm. This is an opportunity for adults to visit the club and sample the game of tennis. Coaches will be on hand to answer questions and deliver advice if necessary. Refreshments will be served.
Junior Open Day
Our junior open day is planned for Sunday August 28th all juniors are welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring their friends to participate in matches and coaching sessions. Coaching starts at 11 and continues to 2pm.
Junior Coaching
Clem Higginbotham continues coaching every Saturday for children under 7 at 10am. Children ages 8 to 11 have coaching at 11 and coaching for older children will start at 12. Clem can be contacted at 0864022490.

Social Tennis
Men compete every Monday, the ladies play every Tuesday while mixed doubles competitions are held every Thursday. New ladies and men are welcome to come along and play some games any of the above nights.
