Midland League

The midland league with its six divisions starts this week. Athlone teams 3 and 4 are in action with Athlone 3 having a home fixture against Tullamore. Division 4 team members have an away match against Birr Wilmer. Division 2 competition will not start until the end of August. All teams have been chosen based on competitors’ positions on the ladies and men’s pyramids.

Division 2 Team: Lisa Brennan, Paula Dowling, Des Windsor Mc Glynn and Tomasz Koza

Division 3 Team: Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, George Bodor and Richard Frank.

Division 4 Team: Ann O’ Sullivan, Joan Conway, John Cooney and Dave Costello.

Summer Leagues

The Men's and Ladies' summer leagues are now arranged with groupings as follows based on pyramid placings. All matches must be completed by 1st September with presentation of prizes that evening.
As usual the Pyramids will be revised after the league on a two up, two down basis. All results must be entered on the sheets posted in the clubhouse.

Birr Wilmer Open

Congratulations to Sean Raftery who won the men’s singles competition organised by Birr Wilmer last Saturday.

Junior Tournaments

Junior tournaments are being organised every Tuesday and Thursday starting Tuesday August 2nd and continuing until 11th in preparation for the junior club championships which will commence in mid-August. These supervised sessions will run from 12 to 3pm and all members are encouraged to attend.

Family Open Day

The club is organising a family open day on Sunday August 14th from 2 to 4pm. This is an opportunity for families to visit the club and sample the game of tennis. Coaches will be on hand to answer questions and deliver advice if necessary. Refreshments will be served.

Junior Coaching

Clem Higginbotham continues coaching every Saturday for children under 7 at 10am. Children ages 8 to 11 have coaching at 11 and coaching for older children will start at 12. Clem can be contacted at 0864022490.

Social Tennis

Kieran Mc Carthy and Pat Conway were the consistent players last Monday having an excellent night’s tennis.

Mary Jo O’ Farrell made a welcome return to action last Tuesday after a recent injury and she and Olivia Sumner engaged the other ladies in plenty of exhausting rallies.

Rose Costello and Tomasz Koza formed a reliable combination during the mixed doubles competition last Thursday.

Men compete every Monday, the ladies play every Tuesday while mixed doubles competitions are held every Thursday. New ladies and men are welcome to come along and play some games any of the above nights.
