Coaches Clem Higginbotham, Lisa Brennan and Derek Stenson were very busy teaching forehand and backhand and all the other tennis shots. There were also plenty for practice sessions in fairly favourable weather conditions

Our second summer camp will be starting Monday 27th July. The camp starts at 10am and continues until 1pm for five days. To book a place or more information contact Clem Higginbotham 0864022490.

Athlone will play Loughrea 1 in division 4 this Tuesday, the team consisting of Ann O’ Sullivan, Joan Conway, Ailbie Conway and P J O’ Reilly.

In division 3 Athlone 1 also has a home fixture against Birr Wilmer 1 on Wednesday. The team to play is Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, Richard Frank and Des Windsor Mc Glynn. Athlone 2 has a bye this week but will be in action the following week. The team is Anne Dooley, Paula Dowling, Tomasz Koza and Luciano Molinari.

This year we have a team in division 5, a division that we won in 2004 and 2009. The team to compete against Birr Wilmer is Julie and Rose Costello, Olivia Sumner and Mary Jo O’ Farrell.

Longford Open

Congratulations to Athlone players Sean Raftery and Des Windsor Mc Glynn who both competed in the men’s B final at the Longford Open. Sean was victorious in a close exciting final winning 2-1. Both then teamed up to beat Longford pairing of Chris Clarke and David Manser in the men’s doubles B final. In the junior open Harry O’ Rourke was defeated in the boy’s under 18 final.

It was a great week for the three players.

Social Tennis

Last Monday Niall Gallagher and Thomas Furey played some very fine tennis, Niall put away a lot of volleys with aplomb while Thomas had his share of aces.

The Wimbledon effect resulted with the largest number of ladies competing on Tuesday. Anna Walsh and Mary O’ Neill, two of the longest serving players in the club, played long and faultless rallies during two hours of lively tennis.

In the mixed doubles on Thursday Rose Costello and Michael Doheny had many winners and were an excellent combination.
