Easter Junior Competition

A hugely successful tennis competition for juniors was held on Easter Monday at Athlone Tennis Club. It was attended by almost 30 enthusiastic young tennis players ranging in age from 6 to 16. The format was doubles and there were three competitions: one for the very young, one for 9- to 12-year-olds and one for teenagers. The winners in the ‘young players’ category were Evie-Rose O Meara, Cuan Ryan and Emily Petit. The winners in the intermediate section were Margaret Menton and Conor Matthews in first place with Bebhinn O Meara and Cilian Kenny as runners-up. In the senior competition Jack O Shea and Abhinav Bhyrraju-Varma and Hannah Henneghan and Donal McDermott were the most successful.

 

Club nights

Club nights continue on Monday (gentlemen’s night), Wednesday (ladies’ night) and Thursday (mixed doubles night). Play begins at 7.30 pm each night, so grab your racket and come on down to the club for a night of fun. The winners of last Monday’s men’s night were Kieran McCarthy and John Cooney with 4 points, followed by Sai and Puneet with 3 points, Peter and Padraig with 2 points and Rob and Atin, Marek and John O Connell and Benn and Dave with 1 point each. The leading player in the series is Sai Paleda with 34 points followed by Marek and Atin with 31 points each. Men’s Spring doubles league ends next Monday.

 

Singles Spring League

Athlone Tennis Club Ladies and Gentlemen’s Singles Spring Leagues are now live. Players must log in to their Tennis Ireland account for their group details and match schedule. Just a reminder that all matches must be played by 01st May. Results will be published next week.

 

Club Development

The club is holding a raffle to part fund the new development. Tickets are available from any committee member and on the web through https://www.idonate.ie/raffle/AthloneTennisRaffle. The new development beside the Regional Sports Centre is progressing nicely. It is anticipated that play will commence on three new state-of-the-art tennis courts by mid-summer.

 

Coaching

Coaching continues for juniors on Saturdays from 10-2. Please contact coach Clem Higginbotham (086 402 2490) for information and to book a place.

 

Junior Tennis

Junior tennis takes place on Sundays from 2-4 pm for members. It is an ideal opportunity for the future tennis players of the club to get some match practice. David O Shea remains the number 1 junior. A league for juniors will commence shortly. This will take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Details to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
