Christmas Hamper Competition

The annual Christmas Hamper Competition took place at Athlone Tennis Club last Sunday in glorious weather conditions. A big number of club members participated in the competition, and all were wearing something from their festive wardrobe. There was a great standard of tennis on display and the event was enjoyed by all. Among the best performers on the day were Marek Rose and Brian Menton in the men’s section and Jacinta Digby and her partner Katja Weberhofer among the ladies.

 

Senior Winter Leagues

The senior winter leagues ended on the 30th of November. Over the last month a large number of matches were played, and several players came to the fore with some very strong performances. Men’s captain, Des Windsor McGlynn, finished top of Group 1 by winning 5 out of his 6 matches. In group 2 there were strong performances from Sai Palanda and Ronan Flanagan. Club Chairperson, Cathal Kenny was the most consistent performer in Group 3 with 4 wins out of 5. In Group 4 Atin Kohli and Padraig O Connor finished top while Group 5 proved to be very competitive with nearly all the matches being played. Boquslaw Stazyk won all his matches but there were some very strong performances from Robbie Ryan and Sean O Meara. Group 1 in the ladies’ section saw Orla Kinahan finishing ahead of Julie Costello by the narrowest of margins. Yvonne Walsh proved to be the strongest in Group 2 with Maree Brennan a very close second. In Group 3 Sharon Carty, Maria McLynn, Paula O Connor and Mary O Neill won the majority of their matches while Maria Moulton and Deirdre O Mara were best in Group 4. The next league will take place in the New Year.

 

Club nights

Club nights continue on Monday (men’s night), Wednesday (ladies’ night) and Thursday (mixed doubles night). Play begins at 7.30 each night, so grab your racket and come on down to the club for a night of fun.

 

Junior tennis

Junior tennis continues from 2-4 pm on Sunday afternoons. A junior Christmas Hamper competition with take place on Sunday 12th of December from 2-4, so get your Christmas jumpers ready! In the event of scores being tied the best dressed competitor will have the edge! There have been some very keenly contested matches among the juniors in the pyramid. Gearoid McCarthy is the new number 1 after a great performance to defeat Donal McDermott who had held top position for the past few weeks. Caoimhe McCarthy defeated the fast-improving Niamh McCarroll in a very close encounter.

 

Coaching

Coaching continues for junior members on Saturdays from 10-2. Please contact coach Clem Higginbotham (086 402 2490) for information and to book a place.
