Return of Club Nights
Club nights will commence Monday 7th June for men. Ladies night will resume Wednesday 9th with mixed doubles every Thursday commencing the 10th June. Play will be from 7.30 to 9.30 and all members are welcome to participate in these friendly events. Sunday 14th is also designated for mixed doubles matches from 11am to 1pm. New members are especially welcome to meet existing members and play in the doubles matches. Partnerships will be arranged each time so it is important to arrive in time.
Membership Fees
All members are reminded that membership fees are due from June 1st and members have three weeks thereafter to pay before their fobs will be deactivated. New potential members can now join our friendly club also. Please visit our website, athlonetennisclub.com, for further information. Fees can, preferably, be paid on line.
Coaching
Clem Higginbotham’s coaching sessions continue every Saturday at 10am for children 5 to 9 years old. At 11 he coaches children ages 10 to 12 and he coaches older children from 12 noon. Please contact Clem at 0864022490 to register for these sessions as numbers are limited.
Rolland Garros Grand Slams
The second Grand Slam of the year began at Rolland Garros Sunday last and as usual there were first round surprises. Seeded players Angelique Kerber, Dominic Thiem, Dan Evans and Grigor Dimitrov exited on the first day of competition. The three players who have dominated tennis for years, twenty Grand Slam winners Roger Federer and Rafal Nadal and Novak Djokovic with eighteen, are on the same side of the draw, only one of them can make the final Sunday 13th June. Nadal is favourite to achieve his twenty first but this milestone may be his most difficult to achieve just as Serena Williams has failed to win here twenty fourth, even though she made many finals.
