Men’s Winter Doubles League

Our winter doubles league commenced last Monday with Rob Kearney and Jimmy Raleigh combining to take maximum points. Marek Rose and Nigel Coyle were second placed, John Cooney and Sai Palada collected two points each while Dave Costello and Cathal Kenny were awarded the minimum.

AGM

Due to unforeseen circumstances our annual general meeting last Thursday had to be cancelled. Members will assemble in the clubhouse this Thursday 21st at 9pm to review the past year and plan for the future. Development of new club facilities will be the main topic for discussion and debate at Athlone Regional Sport’s Centre, now that planning permission has been granted by Westmeath County Council for six courts and a clubhouse.

Senior Autumn Singles Leagues

The results of the senior autumn league will be available next week and the pyramids will also updated.

Junior Tennis Competitions

Junior tennis competitions continue every Sunday from 2pm with Lisa organising the events.

Thursday’s Mixed Doubles

The north wind did blow, however there was some cool tennis played by Evgeniia Yurchenko and Marek Rose who outscored duo Rose Costello and Sai Palada in the mixed doubles competition last week. Deborah Mc Keown and Dave Costello were next point winners.

The Davis Cup Finals

This week the best players from the top eighteen tennis countries will congregate in Madrid to try and win the Davis Cup. This is a new format for the competition and the organisers can expect very raucous and vociferous spectators from the participating countries. The format will be six groups of three countries, the best of three rubbers, two singles and one doubles match, deciding each event. The winners of each group plus the two best runners up will contest the quarter finals. It promises to be a very memorable and enjoyable event.

Sunday’s Mixed Doubles

Julie and Rose Costello, Evgeniia Yurchenko, Shadi Kalask, Pat Conway and Vijyant Singh were among the competitors participating in friendly games in the wintry sunshine last Sunday.
