Men’s Doubles Competition

The men’s doubles competition is proving to be very successful with all courts in use for over two hours every Monday night. Richard Frank joined in the competition last week and he formed a winning combination with John Galvin. In second place were Arek Trzebski and P J O’ Reilly. George Bodor and Marek Rose collected the third place placed points. The overall leader is Kieran Mc Carthy with 11 points.

 Junior Tennis

Coach Derek Stenson is commencing his tennis lessons for junior members the week starting 16th January for children aged from 4 to 17 years. The coaching is on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays commencing at 4pm. For details of these sessions you may contact him at 0851080013 or email rallyvolleysmash@gmail.com.

Derek is setting up a Midlands tennis circuit where there will be matches for children from under 8 to under 16. He aims to have an event every month at a different club across the midlands. This is an exciting new adventure for midland tennis clubs and an excellent opportunity for our young players to meet and compete against other children.

Australian Open

Simon Carr lost in his first round match against Alexey Zakharov, 7-6 6-3, at the Australian junior open last week. This was his first time to compete in one of the major tournaments and hopefully he will play in the other junior majors during the year.

The senior open had many surprises during its first week. The world’s number one and two men Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic made early exits along with last year’s ladies winner and current number Angelique Kerber. Roger Ferderer and Rafa Nadal are playing well, hopefully the former can achieve one extra Grand slam.

Reminiscence

In 1890 Helena Rice from Tipperary and Laois man Willoughby Hamilton were ladies and men’s Wimbledon singles champions respectively. The years 1893 and 1894 were excellent for Joshua Pim from Wicklow as he was crowned singles champion twice. In 1896 Kerry man Harold Segerson Mahony was Wimbledon champion. A different age but an excellent decade for Irish tennis.

Club Nights

Club nights continue every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30 until 9.30. Men compete every Monday, the ladies play on Tuesdays with mixed doubles competitions on Thursdays.
