Junior Club Championship

Some of the Temple Print sponsored boys and girls junior club championships were completed last week with the remainder to be played at a later date. The children who participated in the five matches that were played gave a wonderful exhibition of exciting and skilful tennis.

Sean Raftery added the under 18 title to his collection of Athlone, Longford and Castlebar B open victories during the summer months. He must now be considered favourite to be in the reckoning for senior champion.

Under 14 Boys: Michael Flynn beat Eoin Roche

Under 18 Boys: Sean Raftery beat Jeremy Clarke

Senior Club Championships

The senior club championships will commence from Monday 7th September and there will be the ladies and men’s singles, ladies and men’s doubles and mixed doubles events. In the doubles events draws for partners will be made on the usual criteria. Interested competitors should sign up on the official form in the clubhouse by Thursday 3rd September.

 

Midland Leagues

Division 3

Athlone 1 and Athlone 2 teams competed against each other during the past week in division 3. Athlone 2 won the event 3-1 but only by one game.

Tomasz Koza and Luciano Molinari beat Des Windsor Mc Glynn and Richard Frank while Paula Dowling and Anne Dooley accounted for Orla Kinahan and Melanie Samuels to lead 2-0.

In the mixed doubles Anne and Luciano were beaten by Orla and Des while Paula and Tomasz accounted for Melanie and Richard.

Athlone 1 travel to play Loughrea this week while Athlone 2 have a home match against Tullamore.

 

Division 5

Athlone ladies Julie and Rose Costello, Mary Jo O’ Farrell and Olivia Sumner played in Roscrea and came away with a 2-2 draw but were unlucky not to come out on top when the number of games won were totted up.

Julie and Mary Jo won their first doubles but lost the second one. Rose and Olivia lost their first match but won their second match 9-5. The four ladies are playing in Nenagh this Thursday.

 

Social Tennis

Social tennis continues every week during the year with the men competing every Monday, the ladies every Tuesday and its mixed doubles every Thursday.

Last Monday Dave Costello and David Manser were on top of their game winning the majority of their matches.

Paula Dowling is always present on Tuesdays, spin and slice gaining her numerous victories.

Anne Dooley and Michael Doheny were the most competitive duo for Thursday’s mixed doubles session.

                                                            

Coaching

Clem Higginbotham continues coaching lessons for junior members every Saturday. The lessons begin at 10 for children under 8, at 11 for under 12 and at 12 o’ clock for older children. His contact number is 0864022490.
