Midland League

Athlone division 3 members Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, George Bodor and Richard Frank played in the final against Birr Wilmer last Tuesday in Portumna. This was a most entertaining final with both teams playing exceptional tennis and keeping the spectators entertained for over two hours.

The final had two tie breaks, the first in the men’s doubles and later in one of the mixed doubles. Richard and George gained the upper hand in the men’s doubles while Orla and George tasted defeat in the second tie break.

Unfortunately Athlone lost and had to relinquish the cup won the previous year by the narrowest of margins.

Our division 2 players Lisa Brennan, Paula Dowling, Des Windsor Mc Glynn and Tomasz Koza got this competition off to a good start to a much fancied Portumna team and have a home fixture this Tuesday against Birr Wilmer.

In their quarter final division 4 match against Roscrea Anne O’ Sullivan, Joan Conway, John Cooney and Dave Costello lost on a 1-3 score.

Senior Club Championships

Two more finals were played during the past week, the men’s doubles and the men’s plate final. In the former Des Windsor Mc Glynn and John Cooney combined to defeat David Manser and Kieran Mc Carthy in an exciting 3 set close encounter. The later was won by Jeremy Clarke who overcame Rob Kearney.
