Midland League
Our Division 4 team had a home match last Tuesday and were content with a 2-2 draw against a very good Portumna team. Ann O’ Sullivan and Anna Walsh lost their doubles match 3-9 but John Cooney and Dave Costello won their doubles 9-7.
In the mixed doubles Ann and Dave combined to win in a tiebreak 9-8, Anna and John were beaten 5-9. Loughrea are their next opponents.
There are no midland fixtures due to the Killaloe-Ballina open this week.
Athlone 3 members Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, George Bodor and Richard Frank play their next match against Birr Wilmer 2 on Wednesday 24th.
Dennis Johnston Memorial Cup Competition
This annual competition will be a one day event and Mullingar tennis club is organising the event for Sunday 28th August starting at 11 and continuing until 3pm approximately. It is a team competition and each team consists of two ladies and two men. Athlone are entering two teams and interested members can register on the official form in the clubhouse. Longford were the winners in 2013, Athlone lifted the cup in 2014 with Mullingar winning last year.
Summer Leagues
Joan Conway, Paula Dowling, Ann O’ Sullivan Melanie Whyte and Anna Walsh were among the lady winners lately. Tim and Jeremy Clarke, David Manser, Peter Agbanobi, martin O’ Rourke, Rob Kearney and Michael Blehane were winners in the men’s league. Presentation of prizes will be on Thursday 1st with our annual club championships being played during September.
Junior Tournaments
Junior tournaments continue this Tuesday and Thursday 16th and 18th respectively. These sessions will be supervised by Lisa Brennan and will run from 12 to 3pm and all members are encouraged to attend.
Junior Open Day
Our junior open day is planned for Sunday August 28th all juniors are welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring their friends to participate in matches and coaching sessions. Coaching starts at 11 and continues to 2pm.
Novel Mixed Doubles Event
A novel family mixed doubles competition is being organised for Saturday 10th September from 5 to 7pm. The stronger family teams will be handicapped so all teams can compete with confidence.
Junior Coaching
Clem Higginbotham continues coaching every Saturday for children under 7 at 10am. Children ages 8 to 11 have coaching at 11 and coaching for older children will start at 12. Clem can be contacted at 0864022490.

Social Tennis
Men compete every Monday, the ladies play every Tuesday while mixed doubles competitions are held every Thursday. These nights are opportunities for new potential members to come along and play a few games..
