Annual Mixed Doubles Competitions
Six couples will compete in our annual mixed doubles this week commencing Monday and six more will be in action Wednesday. The top two teams with the most points from each night will compete in the final Thursday. A round robin series of matches will decide on the finalists and the overall winners. Monday’s duos are Carmel Hayes/Des Windsor Mc Glynn, Stephane Kenny/Sai Palada, Julie Costello/Rob Kearney, Rose Costello/John Galvin, Kathryn Raleigh/Dave Costello and Deborah Mc Keown/Pat Conway. Wednesday’s couples competing will be Anne Dooley/Hughie Glynn, Jacinta Digby/Anders Leal, Sine Mc farlane/Jimmy Raleigh, Mary Jo O’ Farrell/Marek Rose, Evgenyia Yurchenko/Eugene Dooley and Anna Walsh/John Bray.
Annual Open Competitions
Our annual open competitions will commence Sunday 7th July with all finals the following Sunday. To enter this year all competitors must go on our web site, www.athlonetennisclub.com, and click on the link Athlone Senior Open. Events this year are ladies’ and men’s classes A, B, C with an over 50’s also for men. The ladies’ and men’s doubles events have classes A and B, the mixed doubles is a handicap competition. Closing date for entries is Friday 5th July.
Summer Camps
We are organising two summer camps this year. Our first summer camp will start Monday July 15th to Friday July 19th from 10am to 1pm and our second will be from July 29th to 3rd August, contact Clem for details and to book a place at 0864022490.
Sunday’s Mixed Doubles
Sunday’s mixed doubles friendly competition continues every week, commencing at 11 and continuing until 1pm. Last Sunday the top three mixed doubles partnerships were Evgeniya Yurchenko/Lukasz Mierzwa, Deborah Mc Keown/Sai Palada and Rose/Dave Costello. Next Sunday members and adults wishing to join very active tennis club can participate in another mixed doubles competition starting at 11am.
Junior Members’ Games
Lisa and Clem supervise children’s games every Sunday afternoon, ages 10 to 16 from 2pm until 3.30. Then the younger children can enjoy friendly competitions until 5pm.
Senior Summer Singles Leagues
Our summer singles leagues results sees Laura Hunt and Des Windsor Mc Glynn gaining top positions in Group A of the ladies and men’s leagues. Promoted ladies from Group B are Julie Costello and Stephane Kenny. Jacinta Digby and Carmel Hayes gain promotion from Group C. Richard Frank and John Galvin move up from Group B of the men’s league while Cathal Kenny and Marek Rose are promoted from Group C.
Senior Pyramids
Laura Hunt, Lisa Brennan and Anna Walsh hold the top three positions on the ladies' pyramid. Des Windsor Mc Glynn, Harry O' Rourke and Peter Agbanobi are the top three on the men's equivalent.
Men’s Doubles Summer League
Nineteen gents turned up for competitive tennis last Monday and it’s probably a record for a Monday night, the move to the regional sports centre will cater for such a large number of competitors. Hughie Glynn and Lukasz Mierzwa were the winners acquiring most points. Sai Palada and John Galvin were runners up and joint third were Kieran Mc Carthy/Dave Costello and Des Windsor Mc Glynn/Pat Conway. All other players were also point winners.
Thursday’s Mixed Doubles Competition
Five couples enjoyed friendly competitive tennis last Thursday evening, Anne Dooley/Shadi Kalash, Rose Costello/Conor Jones, Evgeniya Yurchenko/Marek Rose, Sine Mc Farlane/Sai Palada and Mary Jo O’ Farrell/Jamie Waldron, the latter scoring most points.
Coaching
Clem continues coaching sessions every Saturday starting at 10am for children 4 to 8 years old. At 11 he coaches children ages 9 to 12 and from 12 he coaches older children. Please contact Clem at 0864022490 for further details.
