Athlone V Loughrea Annual Challenge

Our annual competition against members from Loughrea was as usual a well contested event with fourteen members from each club participating. This year the event was held in Athlone and the home team just about enjoyed victory, 58 points to 54. Paula Dowling and Michele Culligan lost by a single point while Anna Walsh and Joan Conway won 6-2. Rose Costello and Mary Jo O’ Farrell also lost by the minimum but Oonagh Collins and Carmel Hayes drew 4-4. Des Windsor Mc Glynn and Richard Frank were narrowly defeated while John Cooney and Marek Rose had a convincing 7-1 win. Dave Costello and Sai Palada drew their match.

After the ladies’ and men’s doubles matches Athlone lead by four points. The results of the mixed doubles matches were very evenly matched and keenly watched, the overall final result gave Athlone a four point win, both clubs have now won the trophy four times.
