Senior Winter Leagues

The ladies’ and men’s winter senior leagues will be commencing this weekend and all members wishing to participate should register their name on the official form in the clubhouse or use any of the usual methods to register. Closing date for entries is Thursday 8th and Groups will be arranged depending on each person’s place on the ladies’ and men’s pyramids.

Men’s Winter Doubles Competition

This competition started last Monday with action on all four courts thanks to the large number of competitors. After one and a half hours tennis the winners from Group A were Tim Clarke and Dave Costello while John Galvin and Marek Rose topped group B. The two pairings then played in the A final while the runners up in each group played in the B final, likewise the third and fourth placed duos competed against each other respectively. Last week’s winners were John Galvin and Marek Rose, both collecting four points, Tim and Dave received three points while Martin O’ Rourke and Denis Galvin were awarded 2 points for third place. All other players collected one point each for attendance.  

Club Nights

Club nights continue every Monday, this is an opportunity for male members to play in our winter doubles league, just come along at 7.30. The ladies compete every Tuesday, last Tuesday Laura O’ Cluaid, Mary Jo O’ Farrell and Rose Costello were the outstanding players. Mixed doubles is on every Thursday starting at 7.30 with continuous competitions until 9.30.

Australian Open

In the first Grand Slam of the year Caroline Wozniacki was a very deserving champion. Even though she was ladies number one for 67 weeks from October 2010 to 2012 a Grand Slam victory eluded her. Roger Federer won his twentieth Grand Slam, a remarkable achievement at the age of 36, he now is four ahead of Rafael Nadal and 8 ahead of Novak Djokovic two of his greatest contemporary rivals.
