Denis Johnston Memorial Cup

Athlone’s match against Mullingar 1 was played last Wednesday and ended with a 2-2 draw. George Bodor and Rose Costello were subbing for Jacinta Digby and Tomasz Koza.

Rose and Sine Mac Farlane were beaten 0-2 in the ladies doubles. George and Dave Costello won the men’s doubles 2-0. In the two mixed doubles Rose and George won 2-0 while Sine and Dave lost 0-2.

Athlone play Mullingar 2 this Wednesday and a draw will suffice for the Athlone quartet to compete in the final this Friday. Jacinta and Tomasz will be back in action on Wednesday and a positive result then will see all four travelling to Mullingar on Friday to defend the cup won last year.

Junior Club Championships

The under 10 boys, under 14 girls and the under 18 girls club championships were completed over the weekend. The under 10 boy’s final was an all family event with David O’ Shea getting the better of his younger sibling Jack in a very exciting final.

Spanish student Regina Fente overcame Najat Bashiru in the girl’s under 14 final while Aoife Raleigh was victorious against Maeve Bass in the under 18 girl’s final.

Junior Tennis Coaching and Competitions

Derek Stenson is organizing tennis lessons for junior members every Tuesday and Friday evenings. Derek can be contacted at 0851080013.

Clem Higginbotham continues coaching lessons for junior members every Saturday. The lessons begin at 10 for children under 8, at 11 for under 12 and at 12 o’ clock for older children. His contact number is 0864022490.

Annual General Meeting

Our AGM will be held in the clubhouse on Thursday 12th November, nomination and motion forms are now available in the clubhouse for members who wish to nominate officers or committee members or indeed motions for 2015-16.

Social Tennis

Social tennis continues every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday commencing at 7.30 and lasting two hours. Men compete every Monday, the ladies participate every Tuesday with mixed doubles competitions every Thursday.

Autumn League

The leagues are progressing nicely due to their competitive nature and the very favourable October weather conditions. Paula Dowling has four wins so far and is undefeated in group 1 of the ladies league. Jacinta Digby may win group 2 with Rose Costello leading group 3.

Sean Raftery is likely to top group 1 of the men’s league and claim top position on the pyramid for the first time. Luciano Molinari and George Bodor are going very well in group 2 and 3 respectively. Winning players so far from groups 4, 5 and 6 are Kieran Mc Carthy, James Roche and Oisin Stronge respectively.
