The finals of this competition are posponed until the new year.
Rob Kearney, Dave Costello, Geoff Yorke and Jimmy Raleigh travel to Mullingar to compete in the finals of the Midland Autumn League. Players from Athlone, Longford, Cavan and Mullingar will play in the finals. This is an historic occasion as it is the finals of an inaugural competition. All four players are wished the very best of luck.The last series of matches were completed last Sunday 22nd. Athlone players entertained players from Mullingar Tennis Club. Derek Stenson and Geoff Yorke won their singles against Paul Murphy and Eamonn O’ Rourke. Dave Costello and Jimmy Raleigh suffered defeats this week against Roddy Corbett and Eamonn Keegan. Mullingar won both doubles events. All four clubs play in the finals on Sunday 6th December in Mullingar.
The midland league continued on Sunday 15th with Athlone players visiting Mullingar. Dave Costello and Jimmy Raleigh, after yet another tiebreak, won their singles matches against Roddy Corbett and Eamonn Keegan. Rob Kearney and Geoff Yorke were defeated by Mullingar’s Paul Murphy and Eamonn O’ Rourke.Paul and Eamonn combined to win in 2 sets against Rob and Jimmy while Dave and Geoff lost in a tiebreak to Roddy and Andy. Next Sunday Athlone play Mullingar in Athlone.
Athlone travelled to Longford on Sunday 8th to play in the Midland League Competition and even though the final tally of games won was 45 to 46 in favour of Longford Athlone players were defeated by 4 matches to 2. Geoff Yorke won his singles match against Mike de Jong while Michael Beirne and Rob Kearney defeated Longfords Lorcan Gearty and David Reilly in the doubles. Derek Stenson was beaten by Adam Suzin in the singles then Adam combined with Mike de Jong to win the doubles against Geoff and Derek. Athlone put on a good show and were narrowly beaten in a number of tie breaks. Athlone players have a home draw in the next round against Mullingar.
Athlone played Cavan in the Midland League Competition on Sunday 1st and the result was 3 games each. Bob Kearney and Geoff Yorke won their singles matches and they combined to also win their doubles match. Jimmy Raleigh and Martin O’ Rourke lost their singles and doubles matches to Cavan their doubles ending in a champions tiebreak of 10 – 8. Athlone players travel to play Longford in the next round.
Athlone Tennis Club players played in Cavan last Sunday 25th and were defeated 44 points to 33. This is the first defeat for the four Athlone players. Geoff Yorke won his singles and then combined with Eugne Dooley to win their doubles event. Denis Galvin and Jimmy Raleigh lost their matches. Athlone has a home match to Mullingar next Sunday.
On Sunday 18th Athlones Darek Materniak and Dave Costello won their singles matches against Adam Suzin and David Reilly respectively and they then combined to defeat them again in a doubles match. Longfords Lorcan Gearty and Mike de Jong defeated Eugene Dooley and Geoff Yorke in the singles and doubles event.
