A new and exciting tennis sport event started this last Sunday between four midland tennis clubs. Athlone, Mullingar, Longford and Cavan Tennis Clubs have organised a new autumn league for the midlands. Hopefully this innovative event will grow and include a ladies section as well. The competition consists of four players and will be played on a home and away basis. Each competitor will play a singles match followed by a doubles match. Last Sunday Athlone Tennis Club hosted Longford players and the final score was a draw 3 – 3, however Athlone won winning 47 points to Longford’s 42. Athlone has an away match to Cavan next Sunday.
New Midland League 25-10-09
Athlone Tennis Club players played in Cavan last Sunday and were defeated 44 points to 33. This is the first defeat for the four Athlone players. Geoff Yorke won his singles and then combined with to win their doubles event. Eugene Dooley and Jimmy Raleigh lost their matches. Athlone has a home match to Mullingar next Sunday.
